Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your new baby!  We are so glad that you have chosen your provider from our group. Your pregnancy is a time of great excitement, many questions and new financial responsibilities. This section will introduce you to our practice, and help answer some of your questions about prenatal care, labor and delivery. “What is 4-D Ultrasound?”

After you have had the standard 18-20 week 2-D diagnostic survey of your baby’s anatomy, you may wish to schedule a fun 4-D ultrasound visit with us, so that you will have a special picture package of your baby to share with friends and family. 4-D imaging is basically a three-dimensional picture with movement, providing live action images of your unborn baby. These images can be saved for you on thermal paper, a CD-rom for still digital photographs (.jpeg format), and on a DVD disk. While all fetal ultrasound studies are used to rule out birth defects, you should realize that even with a normal ultrasound, this technology sometimes fails to identify fetal abnormalities that are discovered only after the baby’s birth. 4-D ultrasound is performed as a courtesy service to our patients, and is not a substitute for advanced Level II diagnostic ultrasound studies.

“How much does it cost, and will my insurance policy cover 4-D ultrasound?”

You may purchase any one of the image packages of your baby. It is important that you understand that insurance does not cover 4-D ultrasound, and therefore you must pay for this service at the time you schedule your visit (cash, check or credit card).

“When is the best time to schedule my 4-D ultrasound?”

The images produced depend greatly on your baby’s position in the uterus, and because of this we cannot guarantee that you will have ideal images of your baby at any time. An image at 28-30 weeks would show a chubby face with definition. At this point in pregnancy, the image will only show a specific body part because the whole baby is now too large to appear in one image.
